Wellbeing

At our school, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Whether your child needs help with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, we are here to help them thrive at school and in daily life.

How we support student wellbeing

Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.

We do this through:

Positive Behaviour for Learning

At Woodport Public School, we are proud to be a PBL school. We are committed to fostering a learning environment where students feel safe, respected, and ready to learn.

Our approach includes:

  • Weekly K–6 PBL focus lessons that explicitly teach school-wide behaviour expectations.
  • Clear rules and expectations displayed throughout classrooms and playground areas.
  • A consistent and predictable approach to behaviour, with all staff following agreed processes.
  • A school-wide reward system, where students earn Ernie's for demonstrating expected behaviours.
  • A Rewards Day each term to celebrate and acknowledge students who consistently uphold our school values.

The Benefits of PBL

  • Students know what is expected and respond positively when expectations are clear.
  • Teachers apply consistent strategies, improving classroom management and support.
  • The school environment is safer, calmer, and more inclusive.
  • Parents and the wider community are more engaged.
  • Challenging behaviours are significantly reduced.

PBL not only supports behavioural development but also enhances academic and social success. By building a school culture based on respect, responsibility, and safety, we are empowering every student to reach their personal best.

Supporting Student Wellbeing and Resilience

At our school, we’re committed to helping children build emotional strength and resilience to support their overall wellbeing. We equip students with lifelong skills to navigate emotions, build confidence, and thrive—in the classroom and beyond.

Our focus includes:

  • Practical strategies to recognise and manage anxious thoughts
  • Building resilience and emotional strength
  • Encourage a growth mindset in everyday challenges
  • Simple conversation techniques that can be used both at school and at home

Five Keys to Success

At our school, we focus on developing the following Five Keys to Success from the You Can Do It! program:

  1. Confidence – Believing in yourself and your ability to succeed.
  2. Persistence – Continuing to try, even when learning is difficult.
  3. Organisation – Planning your time, setting goals, and being prepared.
  4. Getting Along – Cooperating with others, being respectful, and resolving conflicts peacefully.
  5. Emotional Resilience – Staying calm in difficult situations and bouncing back after setbacks.

These skills help students become more successful learners and positive members of the school community.

School Chaplain

The School Chaplain plays an important role in supporting the emotional, social, and overall wellbeing of our students, staff, and families. The focus is on creating a caring, inclusive environment where everyone feels supported to do their best.

Some of the ways our School Chaplain supports the school community include:

  • Running small support and resilience-building groups tailored to student needs
  • Checking in with students who may need a listening ear or extra encouragement
  • Assisting in classrooms to support student learning and engagement
  • Promoting friendship-building and inclusion during playground time
  • Providing support to parents and staff as part of a whole-school wellbeing approach

Seasons for Growth

Seasons for Growth  is a unique program designed to support students in understanding and managing grief, loss, and other significant life changes. Through the symbolism of the seasons, the program helps students explore their feelings and build emotional resilience in a caring, supportive environment.

  • Understand the emotional impact of change and loss
  • Learn effective ways to cope with and respond to these challenges
  • Share experiences and feelings with others in similar situations
  • Develop communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Build a stronger sense of resilience and emotional wellbeing

At the conclusion of the program, students are celebrated for their growth, strength, and the valuable skills they've gained through this experience.
