During Yr 3 Maths groups, students used real-life catalogues to organise a party for 30 adults and 10 children. Their budget was $100 and they worked in small groups to design a menu, party theme, time of event and cost. Learning involved working out how much items cost per kilo and how many kilos they would need, adding up the cost of multiple products, rounding to dollars, negotiating and cooperating with their peers, deciding how much change they would be left with, figuring out how to cater for both adults and kids and then preparing a presentation to the class to showcase and justify their final choices. The students worked impressively well with each other and showed great respect for each others' ideas. It was wonderful to watch them proudly present their final concepts and they very much enjoyed the process!
