On Wednesday 29 May, fifteen girls represented Woodport PS in girls’ soccer in a PSSA gala day at Chertsey PS. The girls’ first match was against Chertsey PS. In a close first half we scored early to lead the game 1-0. However, two quick goals by Chertsey put us down 2-1 at half time. The girls lifted and came together with strong team spirit in the second half to play some excellent soccer, with nice passing and strong tackles. Mia F scored an impressive 7 goals in the second half, and Lily F scored 1 goal as Woodport took an easy lead and won the game 8-2. Mia F was named ‘Player of the Match.’
The next game was against Umina PS, who had previously beaten Holgate PS in a very close match. Our first half was extremely close with the score at a deadlock of 0-0 for a long time. The girls defended extremely hard and Kaylea S in goals kept us alive with some great saves. Umina scored a goal just before half time and they went into the break 1-0 ahead. In the second half we came out strong and scored a quick equaliser through some clever attacking play and a great finish by Mia F. Ciarn S had a great looping chance on goal which was very luckily saved by the keeper. The girls pressed on in the attack, outplaying Umina but unfortunately were unable to get the ball in the back of the net. The game went into ten minutes of extra time, with a few close chances from corners for Woodport. The game ended after extra time 1-1, with Umina ahead on corners 6-3. Therefore they were the decided winners of the gala day.
All girls played brilliantly and gave their absolute best in the final game. As a result they were all awarded ‘Players of the Match’. The Woodport team were wonderful role models for our school; working hard, showing resilience and positive teamwork throughout the entire day. A great job girls, you should be extremely proud of your efforts!
