Kindy Start

Our Kindy Start Program is a 10-week school readiness program designed to give children a positive and confident start to kindergarten.

Part 1 – Getting to Know School (Wednesday 2 September to Wednesday 23 September)

Children attend four sessions at the end of Term 3, choosing a morning or afternoon session. They explore the school environment, meet teachers and peers, and learn key school routines, expectations and safe play.

Part 2 – Building School Readiness (Wednesday 16 October to Wednesday 18 November)

Children return for six morning sessions at the beginning of Term 4, enjoying early literacy, numeracy, creative and hands-on activities while continuing to build friendships, confidence and independence.

What to Bring

Please bring a small backpack containing a piece of fruit, a small lunch and a hat. Children must also wear comfortable, enclosed shoes.

Week 1- Welcome to Kindy Start!

  • Meet their teachers and begin to make new friends
  • Build confidence in asking for help and communicating their needs
  • Become familiar with simple school routines, including sitting together, packing away, going to the toilet and moving between activities
  • Explore our sandpit and sensory garden

Week 2 - Learning, Playing and Growing Together

  • Learn important school routines, expectations and safe play areas
  • Follow simple instructions and join in group activities
  • Develop sharing and turn-taking when playing games
  • Explore and make predictions during a fun STEM activity

Week 3 – Exploring, Creating and Working Together

  • Develop fine motor skills through cutting, gluing and creating a fruit basket
  • Build communication skills by listening, talking and sharing ideas with others
  • Explore Playground 2 and Ernie’s Shed, applying safe play routines and expectations
  • Work together on a STEM challenge to build, test and problem-solve a solution

Week 4 – Growing in Confidence at Woodport School

  • Strengthen connections with teachers and new friends
  • Meet some of our 2027 Year 6 buddies
  • Visit the Kindergarten classrooms to build familiarity, confidence and independence
  • Celebrate completing Part 1 of the Kindy Start experience and look forward to returning in Term 4 for Part 2

Year 6 buddies play an important role in supporting kindergarten children as they begin their school journey. Through regular interactions such as guiding them in the playground or helping them learn routines, the older students help their younger buddies feel safe, included, and supported. These meaningful connections help build strong, positive relationships and foster a sense of belonging for both age groups.
